African American history is the history of this nation, yet it is rarely present in our Spanish language children’s books. The wonderful Ana & Andrew series by Christine Platt is an important exception. The adventures of Ana and Andrew will delight young readers as they learn about African American history in Spanish.

In Ana & Andrew Un día en el museo, the family visits the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The story does an wonderful job of communicating the importance of the museum and the pride the family feels as they learn about the history and achievements of African Americans. I have to admit that living in D.C., this book has a special place in my heart. From the metro, to the Washington monument, to the National Mall, D.C. author Christine Platt gives readers a wonderful taste of the city. Of course, at the center is the National Museum of African American History and Culture, captured beautifully in the story and the illustrations.
African American History in Spanish
The other Spanish language books in the series are Ana & Andrew El verano en Savannah, Ana & Andrew Bailando en el Carnaval, and Ana & Andrew Un día de nieve. Each of the titles presents important aspects of African American history and culture in the context of engaging family adventures.

Black history should be part of our curriculum every day. That is why I strongly believe this series belongs in all elementary classrooms. With the Spanish language titles available, that includes immersion and FLES programs.
